Project Description

Personalized Research Information Chatbot (PRIC)

Project Description:

To design and implement a personalized chatbot that can accurately retrieve and present research information from government websites, streamlining the process of accessing data for users and ensuring relevant information is delivered effectively. Every resident in Northern Territory got some kind of unique identifier number like driving license, Age card, Ochre Card. They will be able to get direct access for all the Government research and Government affiliated institutions like Charles Darwin University, Menzies School of Health Research and Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Tertiary Education about science, technology, etc. All legit information and research outcomes will be available for the NT people and they will get a more AI-driven customer service experience from the ChatBot based on the updated information from the Government data archive. All the different branches of Government will come under one umbrella through this ChatBot.

Scope of the project:
1. Data Extraction and Integration:
- Interface with various government websites and databases.
- Automated data extraction tools to pull recent research reports, publications, statistics, and other relevant information.
- Continuous monitoring for updates to ensure real-time data availability.

  1. Natural Language Processing (NLP) Capabilities:

    • Enable the chatbot to understand user queries effectively.
    • Use sentiment analysis to gauge user satisfaction and adapt responses accordingly.
  2. Personalization Features:

    • User profiles to store interests, past queries, and preferences.
    • Recommendations based on user's interaction history and trending research topics.
    • Adaptive learning to refine responses based on user feedback.
  3. User Interface (UI) and Experience (UX):

    • Intuitive chat interface with both text and voice-based interactions.
    • Mobile and web application versions for accessibility across devices.
    • Integration of multimedia (charts, graphs, videos) for enriched user experience.
    • All the searching logs and information will be attached to the account for further usage.
  4. Security and Privacy:

    • Ensure user data protection with robust encryption methods.
    • Compliance with relevant government regulations and standards on data privacy.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Efficiency:

    • Reduce the time taken by users to find relevant research information from government websites.
    • Provide accurate and concise answers to user queries, minimizing the need for external searches. Also, it will provide more accurate stats and numbers than other search tools as they don’t have access to all the real-time government and research databases.
  2. User Engagement:

    • Increase user engagement through an intuitive chat interface and personalized recommendations.
    • Achieve a high satisfaction rate through continuous improvement based on user feedback.\
    • People could use the ChatBot on a daily basis to know about the bills, taxes and renewal date information.

Use cases:
1. Students struggling with their academics or a professional seeking researcher's opinion can visit the portal for the valuable research done by many branches of Government like Agriculture research, Market feasibility test for brewing companies, etc.

  1. An elder wants to know about the current superannuation program offered by the government.

  2. A visitor wants to about the restriction and penalties of the traffic rules in NT.

  3. A victim of labor law violation is searching for the correct verdict to create an appeal.

  4. A researcher looking for the funds he/she could be granted for a project in a certain industry.

  5. A local entrepreneur looking for information regarding the feasibility of a cattle farm in Katherine.

Future Enhancements:
1. Expansion to integrate non-governmental research databases.
2. Integration of an AI-driven summarization tool to provide concise summaries of lengthy research documents.
3. Collaboration features for users to discuss research topics within the platform.

By leveraging advanced NLP techniques and continuously refining our chatbot, PRIC aims to bridge the information gap and make government research more accessible to everyone.

Data Story

Imagine a world where accessing government research isn't a labyrinth of links, downloads, and jargon. Instead, all the required information is right at your fingertips, curated for your needs. That's the world PRIC seeks to build.
Every year, the NT government invests billions in research, generating vast amounts of valuable information. Yet, many people find it challenging to navigate government websites, extract relevant research, and understand the context.

For this pilot project we have used the below datasets:
• CDU Research Webportal: Charles Darwin University (cdu.edu.au)
• NTG Research and health data: Research and health data | NT Health
• DKA Newsletters: DKA Newsletter | Desert Knowledge Australia
• CRCNA research (overall database): Publications | CRCNA

Water Security for Northern Australia co-design report

Description of Use Within the framework of the "Water Security for Northern Australia" program, specific focal points have been identified as areas where the demand for increased water utilization is particularly pronounced. These focal points include Gilbert (QLD), Daly-Katherine (NT), Ord (WA), and lower Fitzroy (QLD). These locations serve as the central themes around which the research program is structured. To determine the most pertinent research questions for each of these focal points, an inclusive co-design phase was initiated, involving close collaboration with local stakeholders in each region. This co-design process yielded valuable insights and outcomes that are outlined in this report. As a direct outcome of this collaborative effort, a total of 15 research projects have been formulated. These projects, which emerged from the co-design phase, are now proposed for funding under the "Water Security for Northern Australia" initiative.
