Project Description

Exploding history from the dusty digital archives.

There's a lot of history available through various national and state repositories that are extremely entertaining. We observed team members' reactions to watching them thought almost everyone we knew here in Launceston would enjoy looking at the archives as much as we did.

History box is an app that aims to engage the Launceston community with history. It scrapes several archives and collates it in an app using location data and key words. The user is invited to upload photos, video, reviews and links to become part of living history. These can either be of the place or object or their reaction to it.

Although this app was developed with locals in mind, it can also be used by future visitors to find out more about Launceston before they leave home. Potentially providing commercial benefit to our community.

Data Story

Our major data sources are Trove (National Library of Australia) and Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office (Libraries Tasmania). We used the Heritage Places data source from Launceston City Council to help us handpick some points of interest and developed queries to scrape Trove and TAHO.
